“Now someone called Brian said, if you are not an athlete or would you be? When I was asked that I said, if I was not in media, I’d be a teacher. If you’re not an athlete, what would you be? I think that that beats my IQ because l have been in sport for what for 20 years. I will be celebrating 20 years on the 31st of August this year. That’s all you’ve known. I always thought l can stay on the site, in my mind l put sport in all my two minds in my head. So if you are not an athlete you would be an athlete. There’s nothing else."

ELIUD KIPCHOGE | KENYAN LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER

Hi and welcome back to my series of conversations with a Phantom X2 and friends. And a true friend of the Phantom X2 is Eliud Kipchoge. I want to say, welcome. I'm excited. I never stutter. So you're going to forgive me if I'm not usually myself, okay? I'm Caroline Mutoko and I'm a friend of the Phantom X2 and friends. So I'm going to start by asking you a question. That was actually given to me, by the people on Facebook, Mercy, wanted you know, we call you goat, we call you living legend, world's champion. What does your mother call you?

To say actually the truth is that am still this boy, really? Yes, I don't think my mother understands what create a full-time means. Yes, no, really, absolutely. “Ule Kijana wangu” literary, yes yes. Okay. I have a very interesting one here from Misimi. Misimi me says, is your milk delivery bicycle still alive. It's not alive, It was not mine. I was hired. And then? I was earning by just transport fee. So immediately, I left the job of actually dropping the milk. Then I left the bike also.

“Hukuenda ukanunua, ukona do? Si kununua niliachia mwenyewe”. Uliachia mwenyewe? Yeah.

How long did you do milk delivery business? I think over six months close to a year, okay? And then when you decided running is what you're going to do? Yes, I got some salary to buy the shoes buy the the equipment, and I embarked on the real job now oh the real job now and not delivery was not the real job, okay. So I have to ask you about this great phone in a moment, but first, what has been your greatest failure and what did you learn from it?

I think in sport my greatest failure actually is when I failed to clinch actually the top three in London and l learnt that , actually you know, you cannot be happy every now and then. And sometimes you can, you can work up very early in the morning and it's not your day. So I learned a lot that actually missing the podium is not actually is it's not suicide, no it isn’t ,it's not the end but even then how do you come back from something like that because you've trained and trained and trained and then you're not in the top three, how do you get back?

I go back to the training by actually drawing the drawing board with all my, my team, have a great team to discuss and then I forget what has happened. Okay? I start again fresh, setting the goals and having direct system securely on the ground and the fruits, actually came in. And any finally comes through this, however, and I love that, you talked about your team, you're very particular, you're very clear about which brands you want to work with. And in this case the TECNO Phantom X2 Pro is the first one. Why? I mean, because I know you don't say yes to everything and this is probably actually your first mobile telephone. Why TECNO? Why Phantom? TECNO actually has been in Kenya for very long time. Yes. Very long time. And, you know, it's TECNO is like household name, especially in up country. Oh and I feel like I'm close to TECNO. Okay. So and then secondly is that it's wonderful because it has a retractable C amera. I know. It's a very good. So taking photos actually this is the generation where by we live around waking up and sleep by taking the photos.Yes. Phantom X2 is the right phone.

I'll come back to what you like most about it. But I'll go to another question. What drives you towards the best because you have achieved you’ve broken records? Actually I need to know. Did you train this morning? Absolutely. I trained for 2 hours 16 minutes this morning that's completing 40 kilometers. But you're human, you're a legend but you are human there are days you must wake up and say “ahh nimechoka leo” Yeah, not all days are actually equal. Okay. Today l can wake up with a lot of energy. Tomorrow l can wake up with actually… zero, the less body and the less mind and I still managed to go through the day and run and the next ten minutes I'll be okay. Pick up a cane and complete the laps.

So what keeps you going? What gives me a calling is the love of sport and the inspiration that I'm still in the general public in the whole world. That's how I want to bring change that I want to to make this country and this continent and this world running more, that I've realized that how healthy is my world. Okay.

Now someone called Brian said, if you are not an athlete or would you be? When I was asked that I said, if I was not in media, I'd be a teacher. If you're not an athlete, what would you be? I think that that beats my IQ because l have been in sport for what for 20 years. I will be celebrating 20 years on the 31st of August this year. That’s all you’ve known. I always thought l can stay on the site, in my mind l put sport in all my two minds in my head. So if you are not an athlete you would be an athlete. There’s nothing else. That's why I'm saying, it's beats my IQ, your IQ, my IQ because I've been living a colourful for 20 years as a sports man and I think that's what tells me to move on. No, I don't have the second option. You don’t have an option. Immediately you have the second option then you can fail. Now that’s is a fantastic answer.

I want to know the first time you felt this phone, I fell in love with this and I think you've heard the story about it. It's made from recyclable material. What did you think about that? I think it was wonderful because personally, I have a foundation and the first fact that of each foundation tools is this is conservation. Okay, this echo friendly. Yes and I say yes, then we're on the same light. You are on the same…. I was not expecting that from you but I like that. Okay, I still these are from Facebook, Samson wants to know, what would you love to be remembered for apart from wining marathons and races? What else? Oh, I learn, in 20 years to come. What would you like us to remember? In 20 years to come, I want to be remembered actually, by teaching people how to push limits. Ah, I'm teaching people to know that limits that doesn't exist only exists only in their minds. Okay. Secondly, is that? I want to make this country a running a running country “mimi na hizi viatu hakuna mahali naenda“ but you can walk with it. Okay. “Umenipata”

No man is immortal. No man. And in every community, there is continuity and there is succession. Are you doing something to ensure Kenya remains A Home of Champions? You've told me in 20 years, you want to be remembered for making and making us remember that beyond athletics there are no limits. You should push ourselves. But what are you doing to extend a hand to the next generation of learners? I'm Fielding now young people both character-wise and in running. That's how soon I will be out of the sport and they will be the ones to run, okay, so I'm trying to actually inject them actually with the right education as to how to handle the wall and to love running and to actually handle sport actually as a profession. So I think the next 20years we will have responsible for citizens in this country who can actually still take our flag up on high. Up on high, and finally, is there any other glass ceiling wish to shut up? I mean, you already did 159. I was driving, I stopped my daughter. Must have been about eight years old. There were five of them in the car and I told him you watch this moment, you watch this. Those are moment that actually, this is a question that was asked “wachana na hizi karatasi”. When did you know, when did you know it was possible, was it what was it on the day or during training.

You know, first I tried 2017, but I missed by 25 seconds. Then I use the same experience to break the a normal world record huh? Then one year, two years down the line, then actually the real opportunity came in and I take it, I grabbed the opportunity, it's an opportunity. This is expensive to organize and a nice thing to think human being can run under two hours. It's expensive to think. And it's expensive to try to tear to try. So, I grabbed the opportunity and I train for six months. And and in my blood actually is I was actually l have a feeling that I can do it. Oh wow! It's so I remember as you approaching the finishing Line, you know, you were busy doing this and this and I was, I was like, dude, focus run, but you knew, I knew I it's down.

Okay. Okay, wonderful. Anything else you'd love to leave us with, whether it's about the amazing new Phantom X2 Pro or your career. Final words. Final words is that my career has been good but not all, but I want to live everybody that let us be friendly to our environment like the way Phantom X has being made and you know, this is our only home we have no other home. This planet is our only home. So we have a huge responsibility to take care of it.

Absolutely. Thank you. Thank you. I'm going to take a selfie with him on our Phantom X2 Pro. See.
